Pain, the most common symptom for which individuals seek help, is one of the most serious and confusing health problems. Some professionals consider pain itself a disease, especially in the case of chronic pain.

Pain results from many causes, particularly tissue injury. It may also result from physical or emotional discomfort. It may be acute or chronic, mild or severe. Pain is a protective mechanism of the body. It occurs whenever tissue is being damaged or altered in any way, causing the individual to react and attempt to remove the stimulus.

    Treatments for pain:
Treatments for pain are diverse. Psychiatry, surgery, electrotherapy, exercise, hypnosis, massage, meditation and medications such as analgesics and anesthetics are often recommended by pain clinics. Heat, cold, change of position, resting affected part, counterirritants, biofeedback, behavior modification or chiropractic procedures may also be prescribed.

Pleasant Hills Apothecary and Compounding Center offers a variety of helpful treatments for fibromyalgia, arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome and many other pain problems.

One of our specialties is the compounding of transdermal formulations, containing NSAIDS, muscle relaxants, analgesics, anesthetics, anticonvulsants, antivirals, etc. These transdermal compounds bypass the GI tract and significantly reduce systemic absorption by being applied topically and directly to the problem area. This can be helpful for patients with previous GI bleeds and other complications, such as reduced kidney or liver function. Transdermals can also be formulated to be absorbed systemically, if necessary, for chronic pain.
